My organisation is currently looking at developing a shared service for HR, Finance and IT. Can you offer any advice on pitfalls and things to look out for.

I will email you a more detailed response to this. However key points are that this method will indeed save costs, however you have to make sure that actual value is added to the Business and that an appropriate service is offered. People who work in the service centre should be trained, particularly for HR, as the potential for error and inconsistency is very large. In addition, check that managers are ‘able willing and allowed’ to move to this new way of working and think about what has been done to help them to make use of the service centre. It should also be seen as a whole organisation change and not just something started by the enabling services. Get chief exec or equivalent to drive it forward.
Make sure managers have a name and ideally a face, so there is a degree of alignment with the business in the early days. Later there can be more flexibility.
